About the event
Our celebratory season, “A New Song,” begins with the festive Cantata 190, Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied (Sing a new song to the Lord). It was written for Bach’s first New Year’s Day in Leipzig, and contains an achingly beautiful duet for tenor and bass. Handel’s Ode for St. Cecilia’s Day imagines the role of music in the creation of the universe. Gorgeous arias in praise of instruments are each accompanied by their respective instruments. Rounding out the program is Handel’s climactic chorus from Solomon for double choir.
